River Bend town council voted 4-1 to uphold the termination of police officer Ann James after a 2 1/2 hour personnel hearing. Military study could lift Transpark project in North Carolina

Maj. Gen. George Babbitt of the Defense Logistics Agency told residents at Mount Olive College that a pilot program to speed military supply distribution is under study as Defense Department downsizes stockpiles. Jobless rate at four-year low sparks market jitters

The Labor Department reported a September unemployment rate of 5.9 percent, the lowest in four years, with 239000 new non-farm jobs added.
