Doe deer with antlers surprises hunter near Vanceboro
Robert Nobles Jr. of Vanceboro shot a 145 pound whitetail believed to be a doe with a surprising eight point rack while hunting last Saturday. The antlers measured 14.25 inches wide and 14 inches high, with the hunter noting the deer may be four to five years old. Biologists say such antlered does are unusual but not unheard of. Nobles plans to have the deer mounted and jawbone aged. Officials emphasize breeding quality deer to increase older, larger racks in future hunts.
