In the Lake of the Woods falls short of expectations
Tim O'Brien's new novel centers on John Wade and his wife Kathy after his failed senatorial campaign. The narrative builds tension around Kathy's disappearance and questions of reality, memory, and alienation, but relies on quote-heavy chapters that slow the pace. While well written, the book lacks the propulsion of Going After Cacciato and The Things They Carried, making it a less compelling entry in his oeuvre.
