Court seeks prison cap hike to ease overcrowding in NC

The cap, set in 1989, has forced release of thousands. Duke warns it threatens court integrity and asks Attorney General Easley to act. Also noted are poultry health risks and a dispute over researchers on Richard J Reynolds III’s Devotion estate.

Health insurance cuts raise death risk for workers

A study of 147,779 Americans aged 25 to 64 finds uninsured workers face higher mortality than those with employer coverage. Uninsured men are 30 percent more likely to die, women 20 percent, after adjusting for age and income. Medicaid recipients fare worse, but health status before work may influence results. The Archives of Internal Medicine reports the findings from 1979 to 1987 census data.
