Prisons in North Carolina push hiring amid high vacancies
North Carolina prisons pursue hires to cover staffing shortages but see high turnover as mandatory overtime pushes workers to quit. Deputy Secretary Tracy Little told a prison reform board that one in five jobs remains unfilled, with exit surveys citing workload and staffing as top reasons for leaving. In Raleigh, Clifton Eugene Battle, a felon, received a four year prison sentence for possession of a firearm after a June 2018 incident when a deputy observed a handgun in his car during a bathroom break.
