New Bern aldermen approved spending 48000 to deepen the city wells by 40 feet as aquifer levels fall about four to six feet yearly. Four wells in Cove City now reach 200 feet below the surface and could require drilling new wells after sinking another 700 feet. A fifth well costing 2.6 million will support an 800 home Weyerhaeuser development near Brices Creek, annexed last year.
