States push explicit consent for pelvic exams in surgery
States consider requiring explicit patient consent for pelvic exams performed by medical students during anesthesia. Duke student Savanah Harshbarger testified about 10 such exams last year, noting vague consent forms. Bills in about a dozen states seek to mandate prior explicit consent, citing patient dignity and protection, while some oppose the move as unnecessary intrusion. MD, nursing groups weigh in as debates center on standard practices and medical necessity.
