Rural Georgia faces COVID toll as couple laid to rest side by side
In Dawson Terrell County two caskets rest beside each other marking a couple who died days apart from COVID-19. Rev Willard O Weston recalls rising rural death rates tied to poverty and lack of healthcare, with 21 local deaths and several in nearby counties. The Tolberts, Benjamin 58 and Pollye Ann, were longtime Tyson Foods workers and church volunteers. Pollye Ann survived dialysis sister Peters, while Desmond Tolbert recounts caregiving calls and a final goodbye. The town grapples with grief as hospitals shutter and diabetes and chronic disease worsen outcomes.
