Whitefield in New Bern 1764 Meet Causes Church Tension
Historian notes the arrival of George Whitefield on November 17 1764 in New Bern as Rev Reed with Governor Tryon and others feared his Methodism would disrupt Church of England order. Whitefield’s visit drew mixed reactions from local clergy and citizens, but Reed reported the preacher avoided excess and urged infant baptism while condemning rebaptism. Governor Tryon later pressed for more religious literature to aid ministers.
