Guilty Plea Filed by Lawyer in 16-Count Fraud Case
In Raleigh a lawyer charged with overbilling chose to plead guilty rather than face another federal trial on 16 counts. Mark Kirby faces a 15 to 21 month prison term at sentencing, after a tentative agreement to serve little or no time was revisited following a jury deadlock and subsequent negotiations. In Asheboro a Seagrove man awaiting an honorable discharge from the Air Force due to his critically ill wife was granted release by Lt. Gen. Ronald Iverson in Korea, with discharge expected within three weeks. In Raleigh, about 85,000 new jobs were added in 1994, the third largest gain in a decade, aided by regional economic development partnerships as Commerce Secretary Dave Phillips urged continued funding.
