North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper issued a statewide Stay at Home order as cases rise and community spread is confirmed in multiple counties. Residents may leave only for essentials such as work, groceries, medicine, outdoor exercise, or helping others. Cooper urged seriousness and collective action to fight the disease.
The New Bern Sun Journal, Craven County's longtime local news source since 1876, is celebrated for its community focus across sports, education, politics and business and is honored with this year’s Community Fabric Award for Leadership.
On March 17 Havelock joined Craven County and New Bern in a state of emergency over coronavirus. City offices closed to the public while essential services continue by phone. Parks and Recreation facilities are closed. Easter events canceled. City Manager Bottorff and Mayor Pro Tem Wilson urge social distancing and support for local restaurants. Utilities waivers for late penalties will be revisited in April. Residents should stay informed on city changes.
A fourth confirmed COVID 19 case in Craven County involves an adult who recently moved from out of state. The March 25 test at the Craven County Health Department drive up site was sent to the state lab, with officials reporting the case on March 27. The patient is isolating at home and contact tracing is underway to quarantine close contacts.
