Flounder Quota Drama Shifts Landings to North Carolina
New Bedford fisherman Steve Donnelly says 500 extra gallons burned and 11 days spent at sea as state limits force unloading in North Carolina. NMFS quotas divide pounds by historic data. New England waters limit access, leaving NC as the open option for landing flounder. By March 11 fish houses reported 1.2 million pounds, about a quarter of the annual quota, with pace likely to change if seasonal reopenings occur in April.
