Alley Renamed James Reed Lane In New Bern History
New Bern aldermen approve naming the alley between Bryant-McLeod and the Oriental Inn as James Reed Lane. Swiss Bear and the Municipal Service District commit 25000 in kind toward renovation of a lane honoring James Reed, a 18th century advocate for public education and first rector of Christ Episcopal Church. A bronze plaque may describe Reed’s work with New Bern Academy and the academy’s first teacher Thomas Tomlinson. Reed is buried in Christ Church cemetery. Renovation funds total 60000 to 80000 dollars with a decorative fountain planned as funds allow.
