Weak AIDS virus may shield against aggressive HIV-1
Harvard researchers report in Science that HIV-2 infection in 756 Dakar prostitutes correlates with about 70 percent reduced risk of subsequent HIV-1 infection over nine years. The study suggests HIV-2 could reveal immune-activating components for a preventive HIV-1 vaccine and cautions against deliberate infection. HIV-2 is milder, slower to progress, and less infectious than HIV-1.
