Groundbreaking Set for Martin Marietta Park Phase 1
New Bern Parks and Recreation will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 1 of Martin Marietta Park on Thursday June 20 at 10 a.m. The event at 700 South Glenburnie Road marks initial park work including restrooms trails boat launches observation platforms picnic shelters fishing piers and redevelopment. The project follows a 55 acre land donation from Martin Marietta approved by the city in 2017 and plans an amphitheater seating at least 3500.

Shark bite reported at Bald Head Island
An 8-year-old was bitten off Bald Head Island in Brunswick County on Sunday. If confirmed, it would be the second Brunswick bite this month after a 19-year-old was bitten at Ocean Isle Beach on June 10 and a 17-year-old girl lost a leg and two fingers near Fort Macon on June 2. A shark expert said the cluster is unsettling but not panicked.
