The decision, led by Chief Justice Chaskalson, involves two men convicted in 1990 armed killings and marks the court's first major interpretation of the new constitution on the right to life.

Indictment Targets Cali Cartel Ties in Major Case

The Miami indictment targets the Cali cartel, described as running like a Fortune 500 company and responsible for about 80 percent of U.S. cocaine. It charges a former Justice Department lawyer who led extradition efforts, plus 61 others, including a former federal prosecutor. Three lawyers pleaded guilty to reduced charges amid a 44 month probe hailed as the most significant prosecution against the cartel.

Murder charges filed against cult leaders in Tokyo plot

Tokyo prosecutors charged Shoko Asahara and six lieutenants with murder for the March subway sarin attack that killed 12 and sickened over 5,500, while nine disciples faced lesser charges of murder preparation. Asahara, held in a Mount Fuji commune, remained silent as investigators linked him to orders to release the nerve gas. Court actions are expected in autumn as Japan faces its biggest criminal case and possible decades of proceedings.
