Man sentenced for smuggling drugs in Craven County

Craven County Superior Court sentenced Stuart Gaidosh, 42, of New Bern, to 32 to 58 months after he pled guilty to drug smuggling charges tied to a Center operation. Judge Imelda Pate presided. Assistant District Attorney Robert McAfee prosecuted. Gaidosh was later found in custody for misdemeanor assault and observed attempting to conceal contraband in a body cavity before disposal in a toilet.

Bicycling Safety Alert Prompts Nationwide Fatalities Rise

Over a decade from 2008 to 2017 bicycle fatalities rose 32 percent nationwide, driven by distracted drivers and unsafe cyclists. In Reelsboro a 13-year-old boy, Allen Jones, died after a car struck his bicycle at 6 am. Another boy, 10-year-old Matthew Leder, remains in Vidant Medical Center ICU after a collision near Ernul. The highway patrol continues investigation with no charges filed yet.

Great Trent River Raft Race expands to two days with concert

The second annual renewal of the Great Trent River Raft Race will span June 21 and 22 and feature the Rockin on the Rivers Kick off Concert. The event, revived by the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce with WRNS, aims to draw thousands as home built rafts navigate the Neuse and Trent rivers along the waterfront.
