Southern fish fry raises funds at Gastonia event
In Gastonia a summer fish fry fundraiser draws neighbors and volunteers, led by Jackee Shaw, to fry croaker and white fish and sell meals with collard greens and cornbread. Historians note deep fat frying’s West African roots, while locals savor the social scene and competing groups such as United House of Prayer. The event blends tradition and fundraising as patrons share meals, stories, and a busy, smoky kitchen.
