Hepatitis C not necessarily fatal and immunoglobulin risks
Craven County health officials warn Hepatitis C is not automatically fatal though advanced cases can cause cirrhosis and death. Symptoms include nausea vomiting weight loss and jaundice with an incubation of two weeks to six months. Immunoglobulin products made from plasma may carry transfusion risks for hepatitis C. The drug, developed in the 1960s, protects the mother from antibodies to the infant blood but could harm a newborn in future blood exchanges. Women with different blood types from their partners receive injections at 28 weeks and after birth.
