Two area men named to North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission

Reggie Caroon of Lowland and Bob Emory of New Bern have been named to the 15 member Coastal Resources Commission. Caroon, a commercial fisherman, was reappointed. Emory, a forestry expert, will join the four year terms starting at the CRC meeting in New Bern July 28 and 29. A public hearing on free standing moorings and buoys is set for 4 p.m. July 28 and a presentation on Cherry Point MCAS wastewater study follows at 9:30 a.m. July 28.

Carteret school board backs 35 million building bond plan

Carteret County educators seek a bond referendum under 35 million to fund new high and elementary schools in the western county, renovations at Beaufort Elementary, upgrades to classrooms and technology, and other facility priorities. Officials aim to cover utilities at Camp Glenn, add rooms at Morehead Middle, replace a building at Smyrna Elementary, renovate White Oak Elementary cafeteria, and expand the transportation garage as part of a 50 million long range plan.

Craven middle schools adopt high school attendance plan

Craven County middle schools will adopt an attendance policy that mirrors high schools. Six to eight graders may miss up to five days per nine week period. any extra absences must be made up in after school learning labs with two sessions equal to one missed day.

Public weighing coastal reforms at Beaufort hearings

The Coastal Futures Committee ends its yearlong review of the 20 year old coastal management program and seeks public input on 47 proposal pages. Hearings in Beaufort tonight and Thursday invite comments from residents, business groups, and environmental advocates as the panel finalizes a plan for stronger growth controls, water quality rules, land use planning, and public participation.

Township 7 voters to decide to form Neuse Forest town

The General Assembly approved a vote on incorporation for Township 7 in Craven County, enabling residents to transform their corner into the town of Neuse Forest this fall. A parallel local bill blocks New Bern from annexing neighborhoods across the Trent River that oppose joining the city.

Havelock optician crowds in to revitalize Main Street

Havelock optician Jim Beasley envisions downtown renewal from within the town. He refurbished a decaying 5,000 square foot building on Main Street, adding windows, doors, a fireplace, a handicapped bathroom, and a gravel patio. He painted the exterior blue, added landscaping, and a brick border, with a fountain Beasley donates fountain coins to the Lions Club. He cites his father’s construction background and plans to acquire two more Main Street sites to boost charm and activity.
