Carteret escapees charged in Florida woman's death

Two Carteret County inmates Richard Eugene Hamilton and Anthony Floyd Wainwright were indicted in Florida on first degree murder and related charges in the death of Carmen Gabriella Gayheart. Gayheart, 23, disappeared April 27 after Hamilton and Wainwright escaped from Carteret Correctional Center in Newport. The suspects were later arrested in Brookhaven, Mississippi, after a pursuit and shootout with police. The Ford Bronco tied to Gayheart was spotted.

Craven Regional cancer program earns ACS three-year approval

Craven Regional Medical Center received a three-year certification of its hospital cancer program from the American College of Surgeons after a March survey. County split ends animal control in Pamlico budget vote

Pamlico County commissioners split 4 to 3 over restoring the animal control program budgeting for 1995. Runways at Cherry Point to get $7 million resurfacing overhaul

Greg Humphries and REA Construction oversee a major Cherry Point Marine airfield project using 135000 tons of gravel sand and liquid asphalt to resurface two 7500 foot runways. The job includes new center and edge lights and a deck mimic for carrier landings. Four months per runway with some closures, finished by mid summer next year.
