Blades House Icon of New Berns Golden Age
The Blades House, a 1904 mansion at Middle and Johnson in New Bern, remains an enduring symbol of the citys golden era. Its 5422 square feet of heated space include a 2000 square foot attic, rich oak wainscoting, mahogany molding, birds eye maple library, and Tiffany glass panels. John Blades built the home from timber saved from his New Bern lumber business with Grace Blades and their sons likely gathering in a grand dining room with built in walnut furniture. Architects note the home retains original marble sinks on the second floor and a buzzer in the pantry. Restoration experts estimate nine months and 250000 dollars to restore, with prospective buyers facing a 450000 dollar asking price and bank verification. Local and out of town interest grows as potential buyers consider a bed and breakfast use with a special permit.
