City approves third shift at sludge plant to meet new rules

Plant maintenance supervisor Ed Rexrode says sludge buildup must be reduced to comply with upcoming standards. City commissioners authorize a third shift, but certified operators are scarce. 41 applicants for a trainee position will be screened for a shift operator, with possible certification in about a month. If needed, a new $300,000 treatment tank could be built to handle excess waste.

Fire destroys mobile home. family survives without injuries

In Craven County a mobile home fire displaced Lewis and her children. Three Town ship Fire Department trucks arrived within minutes and about 17 firefighters contained the blaze in roughly ten minutes. No charges will be filed as the investigation closes. The family, with Dina Jackson, escaped with only the clothes on their backs and no insurance.
