Hog waste spill keeps New River visitors away
A hog lagoon collapse near Richlands released about 25 million gallons of sewage into the New River on June 21. The spill killed thousands of fish and spurred state lawmakers to approve two bills regulating hog farms. Marine scientist JoAnne Burkholder warned the initial deluge may have killed fish, with ammonia and bacteria harming the water's oxygen levels. Local business owner Mark Ivey noted the weekend slowdown as people stay home to read about the spill.
