Relief officials tour Craven County area after storm damage
Federal and state relief teams surveyed Craven County on Thursday to assess Saturday's storm damage as a first step toward emergency disaster assistance. Governor Hunt declared a State of Disaster in 14 eastern counties and urged President Clinton to declare a federal disaster. Total losses in the region exceed 11 million with 7 million in homes and 3.1 million in businesses. public buildings and roads face about 1.4 million in losses. The Red Cross opened three service centers as more than 795 homes, mobile homes, and apartments were affected. 109 homes were destroyed and 215 sustained major damage.
