New Bern and North Carolina shaping Black Union troops
The Civil War reshaped New Bern and eastern North Carolina as enslaved people fled behind Union lines and formed free communities. Black leaders met Lincoln in 1864 to press citizenship, while recruitment rose after Emancipation Proclamation. First North Carolina Colored Volunteers formed under General Wild, later redesignated as Thirty-Fifth USCT, with notable figures Abraham Galloway and James Beecher guiding their bold service at Olustee and beyond.
