Two US Soldiers Killed Six Hurt in Afghan Insider Attack
In Nangarhar province eastern Afghanistan, two U S soldiers were killed and six wounded when an Afghan soldier in uniform opened fire. The Afghan defense ministry reports one Afghan soldier killed and three injured. A provincial council member said the gunman was killed, a claim not officially confirmed.

Tryon Palace crowds tour Civil War reenactment day
Visitors at Tryon Palace enjoyed a Community Appreciation Day with free tours of the Governor's Palace first floor, kitchen and stable office, craft demonstrations, and Civil War encampment displays. Reenactors presented weaponry, cooking gear, and medical items from Revolutionary War to present, including U S Colored Troops 35th Regiment members Joel Cook and David Theorith who noted the 1863 formation at New Bern Academy.

The New Bern Preservation Foundation hosts a two day Antique Show and Sale at the Riverfront Convention Center February 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and February 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $10. A Black History Parade on February 15 begins at noon with a rain date February 22.

John Rice Green and Freedom in Early America
John Rice Green, son of John Stanly and slave mother Sarah Rice, gained freedom at 21 with $1000 saved, later becoming a tailor in New Bern. His mother, freed after Mrs. Spaight’s death, took the surname Green. Sarah died March 29, 1837 at 45, buried near Cedar Grove Confederate Memorial. Green later married Temperance Darden Green.
