Polar plunge freezes Midwest as thaw looms
A historic deep freeze gripped the Midwest with record lows from Chicago to Milwaukee and snowbound Northeast cities. Temperatures plunged to minus 33 in Moline and Chicago bottomed near minus 21, while the system threatened more flight cancellations and a 80 degree swing in days. Schools closed across several states but some students returned as thaw nears. Firefighters battled a Brooklyn blaze amid the cold and traffic bans prompted state police enforcement.
