Craven County drops bid to lure IBP plant near Cove City
Craven County officials abandon efforts to recruit IBP for a hog slaughtering plant near Cove City due to sewage treatment limits. The site, options on 3500 acres, would have produced 3 million gallons daily but drainage and cost concerns made treatment impractical. Officials estimate about $10,000 sunk costs with little chance of reversal. Local and state officials acknowledge environmental hurdles and IBP’s possible shift to other sites in the region.
