State backs pickle firms for salt limits exception
State environmental officials told about 70 people at a public hearing that Cates Division of Dean Pickle and Specialty Products in Faison and Mount Olive Pickle Co. in Wayne County should be allowed to continue releasing large salt amounts. The DEM cited affordability and public benefit criteria, noting the salt hasn’t killed aquatic life but has created saltwater habitats in Panther Branch and Barlow Branch, which flow to the Northeast Cape Fear River. A decision is due by December.
