Lost Colony mystery solved by new book theory
Buxton based researcher Scott Dawson argues the Roanoke colonists did not vanish but joined Croatoan peoples on Hatteras Island. His June published study, The Lost Colony and Hatteras Island, cites 11 years of digs led by Dawson and collaborators including Mark Horton and Henry Wright. Artifacts show English and native life interwoven.

Palace progresses toward normal operations at Tryon Palace
Tryon Palace in New Bern reopens gardens and grounds with limited daily visitors. Executive Director William McCrea says expanding to seven days a week and adding daily attractions at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. marks a step toward normalcy, supported by a state grant and cultural resources department backing.
