NC economy not tied to tobacco yet analysis says
Analysts say North Carolina will diversify away from tobacco without harming the economy though farmers and workers face pain. Tobacco contributed 16 billion dollars annually, but its share of agriculture dropped from 46 percent in 1964 to under 15 percent today as poultry hogs nursery and greenhouse sectors rise and exports shift toward machinery transportation equipment and chemicals. Travel and tourism may overtake agriculture by 2000 per state officials.
