Westward fires draw North Carolina Forest Service crews and support staff. Carteret County resident John Dunn departs for a 14 to 18 day stint while Phillip Ross Dusty Destunder Virgil O Neal from Onslow Pitt join and return in days. Forty state fire fighters have come home from Idaho as 20 man crews assisted federal agencies against major fires. Earlier in July two crews aided Colorado efforts. About 100 support personnel have been dispatched to various western locations.

North Carolina bans jet skis after sunset state law
The NC General Assembly enacted a law prohibiting jet ski use from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise. Violations incur a misdemeanor with a $25 fine plus court costs. Enforcement by Coast Guard and Wildlife Resources Commission. riders must wear Coast Guard approved PFDs and avoid weaving, wake jumping, or “chicken” maneuvers. The rule took effect Aug 1, and some riders remained unaware a week later.

Pamlico County opens schools with three open houses
Open houses are scheduled for three Pamlico County schools. At Pamlico County Junior High, grade five parents and students meet 6:30 p.m. for orientation, then grades five to eight and parents begin at 7 p.m. On Aug 30, Arapahoe Elementary hosts a 7:30 p.m. open house with a PTA meeting, and Fred A.
