Doctor guilty of opioids and tax evasion charges
Sanjay Kumar, a 53 year old New Bern physician, was convicted in federal court on five counts of unlawful distribution of oxycodone outside the scope of practice, five counts of money laundering by concealment, and three counts of attempted tax evasion. The trial cited cash only practice, minimal staff, and about 9500 opioid prescriptions from 2011 to 2016.

Marine Raider Killed in Iraq Action
Gunnery Sergeant Scott A. Koppenhafer a 35 year old critical skills operator with 2nd Marine Raider Battalion died of wounds from combat actions in Iraq on August 10 2019. A native of Mancos Colorado Koppenhafer joined the Marine Corps in 2005 and spent a decade as a CSO with MARSOC after earlier service with 1st Battalion 5th Marines and the 31st and 11th MEUs. He trained to become a CSO finishing in 2009 as the ITC honor graduate.
