Bridge Tender Haywood Huff Family Lived On Trent River Trestle
Doris Gaskins recalls her father Haywood Huff who ran a five room house on the Trent River railroad bridge from 1913 to 1919. The Huff family learned to swim, traveled by boat to town, and endured the 24 hour bridge operation as gatekeeper of the old 1850s trestle rebuilt after the Civil War. Captain Huff swam daily and kept steady watch over the crossing for 26 years while his family lived atop the bridge near New Bern.
