Low oxygen blamed for Goose Creek fish kill near Grantsboro
Staff reports say about 10 000 fish died along a one mile stretch of Goose Creek near Grantsboro Tuesday from low oxygen levels. DEM spokesman Don Reuter noted extremely low oxygen and ruled out algae blooms or spills as causes. Dead species include menhaden croaker mullet spot and eels as winds shifted from southwest to east potentially disturbing bottom water. The affected area ends before the creek joins the Neuse River near Fairfield Harbour.
