Missing Harkers Island woman found in bar
Coast Guard search for a 32 year old Harkers Island woman ended when she was located in a bar Saturday night. She had disappeared while swimming from Shackleford Banks to Lookout Bight on Cape Lookout and was picked up by a boat and returned to Harkers Island. An officer said she did not notify anyone she was back and that a massive air and sea search involved two Coast Guard boats, an HH 60 helicopter from Elizabeth City and an OH 58 Kiowa helicopter from Fort Bragg.

Farmers dispute need for state hog waste training
Farmers debate a state mandated hog waste training and testing program approved by legislators, while some insist current on the job learning suffices. Vernon Bass argues training is waste of taxpayer money, noting lagoons are managed with hands on experience and monthly inspections. Gerald Simmons of the NRCS says formal training would help prevent accidents despite limited official instruction.

State to follow Pitt lead on inmate medical charges
State prisons will begin charging inmates up to 10 for non emergency medical care next year after legislators allowed counties to implement fees. Health officials say the plan, modeled on Pitt County, aims to reduce sick calls and free nurses to focus on seriously ill inmates, with charges applied once the new inmate accounting system is computerized.

Let Your Little Light Shine Says Oriental Columnist
Sandy Lemans reflects on a ferry ride across Pamlico River where two young brothers entertain passengers. The eight year old dances, drawing smiles while the older sibling feels embarrassed. The piece contrasts parenting messages about self expression with the need to avoid rude behavior, urging children to march to their own music and share it, ending with a nod to the hymn This Little Light of Mine.
