Washington’s Stop in Newbern and the Tryon Palace Tale
A history note describes George Washington's 1791 visit to New Bern. He lingered at lodgings linked to Tryon Palace, toured Stanly House, and drank in local hospitality with John Sitgreaves and other leaders. The account blends oral tradition, customs, and local lore. Washington praised the confluence of Nose and Trent and noted New Bern’s sparse wood buildings and census of about 2,000 souls before heading to Wilmington.
