Craven Regional Medical Center debuts its new Oncology Center with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. today. A 2 p.m. ribbon cutting will start a tour of the center and the renovated Emergency Department and Nuclear Medicine Department, inviting public visitors.
The eastern North Carolina platform hearing for the state Republican Party will be at 7 p.m. at River Bend Town Hall. Chairman Jack Hawke says statewide hearings invite input from Republicans who lack a voice and ensure the platform reflects true North Carolina values. Havelock officials approve reclassifying 62 acres along US 70 at Slocum Road to residential R-20A to ease traffic with Cherry Point base gate opening. In Craven County Superior Court Rev Otis Turnage 46 of New Bern pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill for the January 19 shooting of his estranged wife Martyn Turnage 35. He received five years probation and a 10 year suspended sentence after agreeing to plead guilty. Turnage must pay Martyn 13500 over 60 months to reimburse hospital bills and may not visit or communicate with her.
Otis Turnage received probation for attempted murder after a church shooting in New Bern. The court ordered searches for dangerous weapons, payment of attorneys fees, and allowed immediate divorce proceedings by Marlyn Turnage who described life moving on. Prosecutors and clergy backed Turnage but emphasized the gravity of the act.
Craven County Tourism Development Agency looks to 266 new rooms opening this summer to fund three US 70 billboards costing about $9,000. The agency projects a 2.3 percent rise in next year’s room tax revenue to cover costs, with total next year budget around $268,916 and extra revenues likely used for more advertising.
About 35 fishermen and wives gathered near the National Marine Fisheries Service lab on Pivers Island to denounce turtle excluder devices. Protesters, led by Anita Darden, criticized policy as harming communities while demanding clearer answers from Bud Cross, Beaufort lab director, on TED usage and water pollution concerns.
