Council balks at funding fire station expansion and millage cut
Venice council members Ed Taylor and George Wayne oppose the rejection of restoring funding for Fire Station No. 2 expansion and three new firefighters. The panel also fails to reduce the city millage below 3.177 mills, denying Bill Gibson’s 2.927 mill proposal by a 5 2 vote. The current rate yields lower taxes for a $50 000 home after exemptions, despite a 50 percent rise in assessments. The council had previously trimmed to 3.927 mills to match last year’s ad valorem level.
