Venice approves public nudity ban for city liquor districts

In a brief meeting Venice City Council unanimously passed a controversial ordinance banning exposure of private parts in establishments serving alcohol. Public turnout was large yet few exhibits were admissible. Rev Don Struble spoke in support noting moral tone and crowd backing, while clergy attendance included nonresidents. The measure, introduced by Councilman Kalajian and seconded by Caffrey, awaits continuation on page 4.

Larcenies rise while other crimes hold steady in Venice

Police chief Ray Waymire reports larcenies up about 24 percent in the first half of the year versus last year, while street crimes such as purse snatchings, muggings and rape are not up. Auto thefts doubled, but beach warnings reduced incidents. break ins rose slightly with prosecutions lagging, and no murders or manslaughters occurred. Four officers completed academy training ahead of winter arrivals.

Venice residents Mr and Mrs Robert D Mahon own the golden blooming peltophorum pterocarpum at 418 Gulf St. The Division of Forestry named it Florida’s largest of its species after their tip led to an inspection. The Mahons acquired the home three years ago at the corner of Gulf and Ravenna Streets.
