Sharks at Nokomis Beach Prompted By Red Tide Visit
Beachgoers at Nokomis Beach watched several schools of sand sharks move near shore on Thursday in calm conditions. Lifeguards warned swimmers to stay out of the water as groups of 30 to 40 sharks swam within five feet of the shore. Concession operator Guido Saeli captured one shark to show tourists its color and size. Mote Marine Laboratory expert Dr. William Taft suggested the sharks followed a large sardine school and noted such nearshore events occur 2-3 times yearly.
