Longtime Venice resident J Leighton Count Cornwell decries the latest red tide cleanup as the city and county fail to remove thousands of dead fish. He notes public beach areas fall within city limits while vegetation lines complicate responsibility. Public odor and irritation affect residents and visitors as surveyors report large numbers of dead fish near shore and in the Gulf, including grouper in Siesta Key.
Sarasota County Commission chairman Larry Rhodes denounces the Florida cabinet approval of a 10 400 acre Estech phosphate mine upstream of the Lake Manatee Reservoir. Gov. Graham cast the lone dissent in the Land and Water Adjudicatory Commission. The plan envisions 30 years of mining threatening 250 000 residents drinking water.
The South County Family YMCA fund campaign is extended 60 days to Nov 30 after a close call of closure on Oct 1. The committee led by David Farley Hazen and Arbuckle says initial 60 days was insufficient and the trust now runs to Nov 30 with refunds if 425000 is not raised. Contributions total 155000 with a separate 10000 from a large telephone drive and matching gifts available for 500 or 1000 gifts.
Venice residents packed City Hall for the first of two public hearings on the 1980 81 budget. Chauncey Howard of the Venice Taxpayer League criticized the county tax notice and urged a one mill tax cut with city manager discretion to chooseSpecific cuts.
Fiesta runs ten days from October 18 to 26 with events for all. Gordon Plummer, president of the board, says the celebration is for the people and invites clubs and individuals to participate. Originating in 1973, the event is Florida unique for not being a tourist draw and aims to host residents with activities including shuffleboard Go Kart races and a beauty pageant.
Venice Planning Commission chair Eric Edgerton announces candidacy for a city council seat in the December 2 election. He will file soon and decide between a three year term or a two year term created by Councilman Caffrey’s mayoral bid. The three year seats are held by Bob Anderson and Frank Proctor, with Anderson running for County Commission in District 5 and Proctor near the end of his current term.
