County to draft strict zoning curb on roadside vendors

County commissioners agreed to draft a tight ordinance to ban roadside stands in residential areas. Vendors selling watermelons, crabs, shrimp, pottery and other items would face sheriff's deputies enforcement. A public hearing date is pending as officials weigh impacts on farmers and customers.

Venice pawnbroker Richard Brown's trial delayed to November 30

Richard Brown, owner of the Venice Pawn Shop on South Tamiami Trail, had his trial postponed from November 2 to November 30 after a Sarasota County case charging dealing in stolen handguns and a metal sale ordinance violation. Prosecutors say a police informant recorded the sale of three stolen handguns and a gold bracelet for 35 dollars. Brown pled not guilty and claimed a setup. Brown previously served as a Venice police officer and as a former chairman of the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce Better Business Committee.
