On Memorial Day an early Gulf storm drew surfers and boaters to Venice beaches. Waves and choppy seas sent vessels toward the jetty mouth where two boats capsized. two young men clung to a hull as rescue efforts and continued danger unfolded.

Venice City Councilman Frank Proctor 70 says he will seek the mayoral post in the December election. Proctor, an 18 year resident, is finishing his council term and also serves as vice mayor and ex officio Planning Commission member. Incumbent Mayor Harry E Case will not run again. County commissioners approve 18 000 for widening U S 41 Business at Avenue del Circo in Venice. The plan adds a left turn lane from the northbound approach across from Wolfer Motors, with minor widening resurfacing and restriping to ease chronic northbound backups during peak hours and circus traffic.

Venice airman returns home from Nimitz two month tour

Richard Harrell a 20 year old Venice area airman returned home for a week long leave after two months aboard the nuclear carrier USS Nimitz which ended a six month Persian Gulf tour with a port call in Norfolk Virginia on Memorial Day President Carter appeared on the ship during the port visit and Harrell spoke with him Harrell the son of Mr and Mrs William Harrell will rejoin training in Virginia next week with his wife Rhonda and their seven month old daughter and he plans to attend airman apprentice training while service members look forward to increased benefits and bonuses announced by Carter

Walter Farley Day Declared in Venice for The Black Stallion

Venice Mayor Harry E Case proclaims June 5 as Walter Farley Day at a council session. The Black Stallion will premiere in Venice with 6:30 and 9 p.m. showings at Venice Twin Theatres on June 5 and 6, with tickets distributed to students and key supporters. The film debuts statewide in Sarasota on June 6.
