City council debates drug ordinance with stiff penalties
Council members voice support for a proposed drug ordinance imposing jail terms and fines for possession of marijuana or cocaine. Mayor Proctor and several councilmen back the measure while some urge waiting for a public hearing before final decision. The plan would set penalties up to 260 days in jail and 150 dollars for marijuana and 560 days plus 500 dollars for cocaine. A county review previously found the ordinance unconstitutional, but proponents insist it could curb youth drug use and will proceed to a public hearing at Venice City Hall on May 12.
