County commission rushes through brief South County meeting
South County commissioners sped through an abbreviated agenda Tuesday at the South County Annex. At 10 a.m. Channel and Beach Erosion Inc. failed to present before adjournment, as Chairman Andrew Sandegren left to return to north county. The panel later approved a 99-year Venice Library lease with Friends of the Library and directed negotiation for a library expansion architect, while expressing doubts on a Swiftmud study and opposing an I-75 rest stop facility.

Sarasota County considers moratorium petition screening

Fire Spurs 35 Acre Brush Blaze East of Capri Isles
A fire started by a careless golfer and fanned by high winds burned more than 35 acres on Venice Farm Road near Capri Isles. Fire crews from Nokomis South Venice and the Florida Division of Forestry fought the blaze from about 2 p.m. to just after 5 p.m. Evidence suggests a lighted cigarette caused the fire. 15 acres were planted pines from 1968. Some smoldering remained Wednesday morning.
