Venice and Sarasota County officials weigh a mandatory jail and fine plan to curb marijuana and cocaine use. County commissioners sent the measure to committee awaiting attorney general opinion amid concerns about constitutionality and public comments.

Park Place plan revised with one-story design and shops
Towsley-Ward Investments seeks council approval for Park Place a 16-acre development at East Venice Avenue and U S 41 Bypass altering the plan to remove the nine story hotel now replacing it with a 77 000 square foot shopping complex a 180 seat restaurant and a 7200 square foot site for a prestigious dining venue. Coast Federal Savings and Loan will occupy a drive in bank and a drug store hardware store may fill a 27000 square foot east end unit. Construction could begin this summer with an opening targeted for Thanksgiving. Shearson Loeb Rhoades will also occupy space in the project. The firm says no major store is sought for the large west end building.
