Eugene Caffrey is honored with the Shillelagh Award by the Friendly Sons and Daughters of St Patrick at Venice Community Center. Local gun dealer Bill Lilly of Bill's Gun Shop in Venice reports South County Sportsmen have launched a postcard campaign urging Sarasota County Commissioners to relocate the county owned firing range. The only county range is in the north, a 60 mile round trip, with half of Sunday shooters from South County. Lilly notes private clubs leased county property, but only the trap and skeet range remains active. He advocates a mid to south county site as part of the Recreation Budget, after a north county closure tied to The Meadows development and a lease withdrawal by the rifle and pistol club.
