Englewood man faces trial in Texas on drug smuggling charges
Steven L. Ruth, 32, a former Englewood restaurateur, is set for trial March 16 in a federal court in Austin on nine counts of marijuana smuggling. He previously faced Charlotte County charges, was convicted of smuggling in prior year, and could face up to five years in prison and a $15,000 fine. Ruth, linked to the Flying P ranch operation, piloted a DC-4 loaded with marijuana into Texas. He was arrested in 1979 after a Bennetsville, South Carolina landing with 2,700 pounds aboard, skipped bail, then was re-arrested in Las Vegas in 1980.

Second man convicted in quaalude trafficking case
A six person jury found Pedro Leal guilty in Charlotte County Circuit Court on trafficking and conspiracy to traffic over 1 million in quaalude. The August 1980 seizure involved 320000 tablets weighing 500 pounds found in a Chevrolet Blazer. Felix Montes previously convicted testified, aiding the case. two co defendants await trial while three others are missing and feared to have fled the country. A $1 million bond is set if re arrest occurs. The jury deliberated 27 minutes after prosecution rested.
